Introduction

In 1786, General James Wilkinson founded the town of Frankfort, naming the streets, building a ferry, and creating a center of economy for the early settlers along the Kentucky River. This volume is not a comprehensive history of Kentucky's capital, but a journey through time, uniquely examined street by street, sharing the lives of the people who lived in historic north Frankfort. The city is very fortunate that so many of the older homes and buildings are still standing, some predating 1800.

Russell Hatter's popular walking tour comes alive through the photographs of Gene Burch, a local dentist who has been photographing Frankfort for over twenty years. His cityscapes shown in various seasons, presents a lasting tribute to the buildings and to those that once walked the streets of Frankfort.

With the use of over one hundred sources, this most recent history of Kentucky's capital contains an index for locating the town's historic families, places, churches, and buildings.

Among the interesting accounts, you will learn how a murder in Frankfort influenced a composition by Edgar Allen Poe. That Bibb lettuce started in a Wapping Street back yard. That the phrase "dog is man's best friend" was originated by a Frankfort native. That Aaron Burr's first trial for treason occurred here. That Frankfort was the only Unionist state capital ever held by Confederate troops. That one morning together President James Monroe, Zachary Taylor and Andrew Jackson visited Liberty Hall.
